JP and Julson took Grace Kids on a field trip to city center Arcahaie to celebrate Flag Day. They checked out the monuments, talked about the history of Haiti and the flag, had lots of fun and ended the day with some yummy pates!
Arcahaie is where the flag of Haiti was created on May 18, 1803 when the revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore up a French tricolor flag and had his goddaughter, Catherine Flon, stitch together the country’s first independent flag and hoisted it right in the city center.
The flag represents courage, independence, resilience, liberation, unity and hope.
Arcahaie being the birthplace of
the flag is where official celebrations have happened for the last 220 years. Unfortunately, due to insecurity the official celebrations were moved to Cap Haitian this year.
The last few years Haiti has been gripped by violence and oppression due to gangs. So we felt going to celebrate freedom and overcoming oppression was extra important this year.
The flag is a symbol and reminder…
Courage
Independence
Resilience
Liberation
Unity
Hope
Haiti will overcome.
Grace Kids have a future.
